Meet a Ministry: UPJ Catholic Campus Ministry

The celebration of the Liturgy at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ) is truly a community effort. While there is not time for “another” meeting, we all come together on Sunday evenings; and we, though many, become one body! We all come from different places and backgrounds, but here, at the celebration of the Mass, those differences are erased.

Christopher Walker in the Fall

Friday, September 21, and Saturday, September 22, will see The Altoona Cathedral hosting a musical evening and workshop with Christopher Walker, internationally known lecturer, composer and conductor whose works encompass children’s music for liturgy and catechism plus a wealth of material for all liturgical celebrations.

Triduum to Saint Anne

A Triduum in honor of St. Anne will be held at St. John Gualbert Cathedral in Johnstown on July 24, 25, and 26. Mass and devotions will be celebrated each evening beginning at 7:00 pm. There will be a guest homilist each evening and music will be provided by area music ministries. All are welcome!

Cardinal Rigali to Visit

On October 7, 2007 the 50th anniversary of the renaming of the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese will be celebrated at St. John Gualbert Cathedral in Johnstown. Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of the Diocese of Philadelphia will celebrate a mass at 2:00 pm in honor of the occasion. A combined choir including singers and instrumentalists from around the diocese is planned. Further details will be announced later in the summer.

Pentecost Novena

The Pentecost Novena will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Church in Beaverdale beginning on Friday evening, May 18, 2007 and ending with the Vigil of Pentecost on May 26, 2007. Mass and devotions will be celebrated each evening at 7:00 pm. The Pentecost Novena is the oldest novena to be celebrated recalling the nine days between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday that the disciples devoted to constant prayer. All are welcome!

Choir Plans 2008 Italy Trip

The Music Ministry of St. Benedict Church in Johnstown is planning an eleven day choir pilgrimage to Italy, April 10 through 20, 2008. Special features include: singing for mass at St. Peter’s Basilica; attending Good Shepherd Sunday mass with the Holy Father presiding at ordinations; singing for the Wednesday Papal audience; a concert at St. Ignatius Church in Rome; singing mass at the tomb of St. Francis in Assisi; singing mass at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. Also stops in Florence and Ravenna. Singers and friends and family are invited to inquire. An informational meeting is planned for May 4 at St. benedict Church. Chapter Banquet Planned

The Annual Banquet of the Altoona-Johnstown Chapter of NPM is scheduled for Tuesday, June 5, at Rizzo’s Restaurant on the corner of 22nd and Graham in Windber. A “meet & greet” social with cash bar will start at 6:30 with dinner at 7:00. The menu will consist of Rizzo’s famous Italian Feast: Wedding soup, fried zucchini, rigatoni, meatballs, antipasto salad, eggplant parmigiani, lasagna, sausage and peppers, Italian breaded chicken, spumoni, bread, and beverage.
